Kurt Cobain vs. Buddy Holly

The Daily GrudgeMatch is back. At least, I'm going to make a good-faith effort to bring it back. Let's face it, it won't be so much daily just yet, but I will try to be somewhat regular. A good goal for all of us, really.

Anyways, I thought it only appropriate that as I try to resurrect the Grudge, I resurrect the memories of two of our fallen musical heroes, both snuffed out long before their time.

In one corner, it's Buddy Holly - perhaps "the single most influential creative force in early rock & roll." On that tragic day in 1959, the day the music died, Buddy Holly's plane went down in Iowa, along with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. In his wake, he left enough hit singles (recorded in only a couple of years) to foster another decade of "brand-new" Buddy Holly hits, released posthumously.

In the other corner, it's Kurt Cobain, the personification of the "Grunge" musical revolution, who committed suicide in 1994. In his wake he left the smell of teen spirit, grunge music, and Courtney Love.

You know the rules, there are no rules!

Discuss.

First of all, anyone who has ever lived in, or near Seattle knows that Cobain was MURDERED! Duh... (suicide?!...pishhh)

While I respect the body of great rock'n roll that Holly left behind (I know about all his work because I have seen the broadway show) it strikes me that miss Love, Cobain's real legacy, is a far greater contribution to the world of music. I dare say that the music of Love and Cobain will last much longer than Holly's. Holly's music is catchy, Love and Cobain's is timeless.

I predict there will be at least 5 broadway shows mingling the haunting depth of Cobain's hits with the placid insight of Love's greatest ballads. Mark my words. The title of one of these don't-miss-it productions will certainly be: "Lithium: I know who killed me".

If the post-humorous music is compared side-by-side it is also clear who the winner is. Seven words: From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. Just thinking about it makes me crave some hash.

I'm so glad to see the grudgematch back in action. Daily was a bit much for me to keep up with as a mere commenter , so I'm in complete understanding if the match-ups fall a little short of that schedule.

I'm in partial agreement with the distinguished m|w. While the body of Cobain's work is not as prolific as Mr. Holly's, it's timeless topics and deep emotions are not to be undervalued. Not to mention he nearly single handedly liberated us from the reign of 1980's hair bands. His murder (what can I say, it's a Washington thing) was a tragic loss to the world of rebellious teen music.

On the topic of Ms. Love is where I differ from m|w. I offer no such commendations for her.
